The other question about laptops made me think of this one, and I'd love to hear how others have coped with distractions. How do you keep your child on task while they are supposed to be doing specific research or writing on the computer without them meandering off onto other interesting web sites or into chatting conversations? I cannot stand by every second and oversee, so I've gradually reduced the amount of work that requires computer use. Any other solutions that I am overlooking? Thanks!

We have a firm rule. No playing until schoolwork is done. We've found it's the sometimes rules that get taken advantage of the most, so a hard line works well for us in this case. We used to allow some computer play in the morning if the kids were up early enough, but that became a hassle with whining about not wanting to get dressed and do work. Thanks Lorel. I think you must be right about it being a very hard and fast rule! I have seen the same thing regarding free computer use in the morning, I think we'll have to try cutting that out as well.

The same question could be asked of how schools make sure students are using computers for study in libraries. The answer is a little bit of oversight, and a lot of trust.
